Fed: Rights campaigner seeks court order against Mugabe
An Australian human rights activist will seek a warrant for the arrest of ZimbabweanPresident ROBERT MUGABE in a Paris magistrates court tomorrow.
London-based gay and human rights campaigner PETER TATCHELL says he'll seek the warrantunder the French anti-torture law.
Mr MUGABE is attending this month's Franco-African summit in Paris.
Mr TATCHELL says the legal basis of his bid to have MUGABE arrested is the UN ConventionAgainst Torture 1984, which France has ratified and incorporated into national law.
He says he has an affidavit from a Zimbabwean journalist who was tortured in 1999,allegedly on the president's orders, and affidavits from human rights groups stating thatthe use of torture in Zimbabwe is systemic.
