NSW: NYE fireworks amid bushfire crisis
Sydney Harbour's annual fireworks extravaganza has received the full blessing of the
New South Wales Government, despite the ongoing bushfire crisis.
But a City of Sydney spokesman says bushfire road closures may impact on the number
of people who celebrate New Year's Eve in the city.
Premier BOB CARR says he has no intention of blocking the New Year's Eve fireworks,
which were organised and funded by the City of Sydney Council.
Mr CARR says his advice from NSW fire brigades is that there's no reason NOT to allow
the fireworks to go ahead.
Mr CARR says he's been told all necessary fire brigade resources are on hand for the
annual display.
A City of Sydney spokesman says today's smoke haze is unlikely to affect the fireworks display.
But he says the bushfires may result in a smaller than usual crowd because of the transport
difficulties some people may be facing.
Road closures for the celebrations begin at midday tomorrow, as the Cahill Expressway shuts down.
