Vic: Bali survivors McCartney and Martyn to flag off cycle tour
MELBOURNE, April 30 AAP - AFL footballers Jason McCartney and Mick Martyn, both burnedin the Bali bomb blasts last year, will today flag off a cycle event to raise money forthe burns unit of a Sydney hospital.
Executives from the Accor hotel group will cycle from Melbourne to Sydney in the TourDe Sofitel over the next 13 days to raise money for the unit at Westmead Children's Hospital.
Mick Martyn, who now plays for AFL club Carlton, suffered chest burns in the bombingof the Sari Club last October, while Kangaroo defender Jason McCartney received burnsto 70 per cent of his body.
McCartney, who is yet to reclaim his place in the Kangaroos senior squad, believesmodern medicine was a key to his miraculous recovery from the October attack.
"Fifteen years ago, the injuries I and many others may have received - I don't knowif I'd be standing here now," McCartney said.
Organisers of the Tour De Sofitel, which leaves the Sofitel Hotel in Melbourne at 9am(AEST) today, hope to raise $100,000.
