WA: Appeal launched for East Timorese fishers
The West Australian fishing industry is calling for donations of fishing gear to help
East Timorese fishing communities re-establish themselves.
The appeal, initiated by the United Nations through its fisheries project, aims to
attract enough equipment to fill two sea containers for shipment to Dili.
Fisheries WA acting regional manager GREG FINLAY says more than 2,000 fishers in East
Timor are eking out a living with minimal equipment.
He says these people are subsistence fishers who need all types of gear in serviceable
condition, ranging from hand lines, hooks and sinkers to buckets, ropes and small craft.
Mr FINLAY says donations could be made to Fisheries WA offices or to the Recfishwest
office in Perth.
